Natural Vitamins is closing in Greenpoint after 50 years – Greenpointers

Greenpoint lost another longtime business with the closing of family-owned and operated Natural Vitamins at 671 Manhattan Ave.

For 50 years, The Vitamins & Supplements Store has been selling vitamins, herbs, homeopathic remedies and more at competitive prices with a special focus on the bodybuilding community. While current owner Serge Zavala (son of Ecuadorian immigrants Irma and original founders Antonio Zavala) posted about the impending closure in August, the store was open for months before finally closing its doors last week.

According to a biography posted by the store in 2011, Natural Vitamins was a manifestation of the couple’s determination and Antonio’s growing interest in nutrition and iridology (an alternative medicine technique that focuses on the properties of the iris as determinants of health and wellness conditions). . The business was split between two previous spaces (one in Nassau and another right next door at 669 Manhattan St., which is now the EuroChemist Pharmacy) before settling at 671 Manhattan St., where the Zavalas continued to create a space for Natural Vitamins. . In the space of comprehensive health

The store also developed a close relationship with the bodybuilding circuit, including sponsoring professional bodybuilders and hosting events and exhibitions with members of the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness Professionals. After taking over the business, Serge Zavala pursued studies in holistic medicine while continuing to strengthen business connections with bodybuilding and fitness supplements and vitamins.

But the fitness connection isn’t all that Natural Vitamins has, they’ve also worked closely with other businesses in the area like Baya Bar, Brooklyn’s MADabolic, the former UFC FIT Greenpoint gym (which closed its doors for good last May). . Pop-ups and demos

Plus BKLYN, a boutique specializing in vintage and vintage clothing and accessories currently at 490 Metropolitan St., has taken over the lease, though an opening date has not been announced. According to a post from the store by founder Alexis Hopecross, while the space has been secured, they’ve run into obstacles that have caused additional financial difficulties and have shared a GoFundMe to help with expansion costs. .

While it’s always sad to lose an old local business, we can at least be happy about the fact that it hasn’t been replaced by a Chase bank or more apartments.
