Fairway Market, at West 74th Street and Broadway, is always full of energy. With aisles and aisles of every food imaginable, this market is a welcoming place for all Upper West Side residents. And just one step (or elevator ride) above the deli, baguettes and produce, is a quiet cafe with delicious food.

The 74 Fairway Street cafe, which has been open for at least 20 years, reopened on Sept. 20 after a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic. Now operating under new management with a new chef. Its classic chicken matzo ball soup is a comforting, delicious, and flavorful dish to eat on a cold fall day. Contains fresh shredded chicken breast, carrots, celery and matzo balls. One of the things that makes this dish unique is the enormous size of the matzo balls. They are giants. Although their doughy, dumpling-like and slightly salty taste is mild, they soak up the flavor of the broth and add more textural variety to the soup.

The chef, who helped create the menu, has 15 to 20 years of experience, according to new general manager Trevor Arnone in a phone interview with West Side Rag. 74th Street Cafe serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner and is open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

He said Arnon hopes to elevate the bar to almost the best bar on the Upper West Side. I’m really hoping to tap into that old customer base that’s always been here. I know they miss us

Growing up with an accomplished chef as a father, Arnon was exposed to the kitchen at a very young age. At the age of nine, she invited me to cut herbs in the back kitchen at my first reception, she said.

From there, Arnones passion grew. He has worked in the industry since college, first through an internship at a country club in Georgia, then managing a food truck in upstate New York. He said it was my passion and love.

According to Fairway’s website, it first opened in the 1930s as a small, corner produce store. In 1954, founder Nathan Glickberg and his son, Leo, tried to change the market and opened a 74th Street storefront. Although a lot has happened to the Fairway business since then, including a bankruptcy and a 2020 sale to Village Supermarkets, which operates a number of ShopRites, the 74th Street Market remains an Upper West Side staple.

Arnone and his team are excited to transform the cafe and make it better than ever. We can’t wait to welcome the entire community as well as new customers!

The classic chicken matzo ball soup costs $10.
